Solvay's village
hall | **Archived Website/Retired**
Welcome to the Village of Solvay Electric Department web page!
Our village is located in the Town of Geddes, right next door to
Syracuse. Our municipally-owned electric company, established in
1896, has grown from a small utility with a few-hundred watts of
capacity into the third largest public power system in New York
State with 5,300 customers.

Today we serve a bustling area covering all of Solvay and the
Lakeland neighborhood of Geddes, providing electricity to
manufacturing facilities, factories and more than 300 commercial
establishments. One of our biggest customers, Solvay Paperboard, a
cardboard recycler located on the site of the former Allied Chemical
plant, recently completed a $127 million expansion of its
facilities. Pass and Seymour, an electrical equipment manufacturer,
has its corporate headquarters in our service area as well. We also
meet some of the electricity needs of the New York State
Fairgrounds. In addition, the Village of Solvay's 11,000 residents
rely on our department for their power.
Being located next to one of New York's largest cities offers
many benefits to our customers, including a multi-faceted
transportation network, a variety of economic development programs
and a range of cultural and recreational attractions. Our area is
also rich in history, particularly that associated with the Erie
Canal, the legendary "Gateway to the West," which opened in 1825. In
fact, our electric department built its second substation on land
that was once part of the canal before the waterway was diverted
away from Solvay.

Since 1957, we've been buying our electricity from the New York
Power Authority. Our ability to offer a low-cost, reliable supply of
power to residents and businesses has helped make our community an
excellent place to do business. Perhaps you should consider starting
or expanding your firm here.
